About to Break: Diamond Rings’ gender-less dance-punk anthem “I’m Just Me”

Canadian electro-rock producer Diamond Rings, real name John O’Regan, challenges both conceptions of gender and conceptions of the genre often titled “dance-punk.”  His kickass track “Show Me Your Stuff” introduced me to the artist a few years back, and now O’Regan is prepping his second Diamond Rings album (we’re assuming) with this single, “I’m Just Me.”

Over crepuscular instrumentation and an explosive chorus, “I’m Just Me” asserts exactly that — everyone is unique, and no-one fits cleanly into the bipolar conceptions of gender that plague much of Western society (“I’m no son or daughter/ I’m no thing, just me”).  The song is a wonderful affirmation of individuality… and is catchy as hell on top of that.

O’Regan has obviously progressed over the last few years, and I’m now preparing for his next album to make a big impact with listeners.  Hear “I’m Just Me” below and decide for yourself whether or not Diamond Rings is one of the most important dance artists to watch over the next few years.
