Best Coast make a bright Cali pop song out of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon”

Hear Music & Concord Music Group are releasing a new Fleetwood Mac tribute album called Just Tell Me That You Want Me: A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac, and it’s a star-studded affair that should prove interesting — although I’m quite dismayed by the paucity of covers from Rumours and Fleetwood Mac, the group’s two best albums, in my opinion.

Anyway, Cali-based surf pop band Best Coast have taken on “Rhiannon,” probably my favorite Fleetwood Mac song — and the result is predictably amazing.  They speed up the song, taking a full minute off of its playing time by cutting it down to 3 minutes, and give it a straightforward handclaps-and-piano rhythm that transplants the tune into the 21st century.

Bethany Cosentino has a little more fun with the song than Stevie Nicks‘ slightly morose vocal performance, creating a cover that wouldn’t sound out of place on beautiful, hot California afternoon.  I still prefer the original — it’s one of the finest pop songs ever — but this cover does it justice, and it must might top my list of favorite cover songs at the end of 2012.  Stream it below, and listen to four other covers from the compilation — including Lykke Li‘s and MGMT‘s contributions — after the jump.

Previously: “Storms (acoustic Fleetwood Mac cover),” “The Only Place,” “How They Want Me to Be,” “Gone Again
