Since 2005, British alt-rockers Maxïmo Park have released three albums — the first a critical success, the next two selling well (at least in the U.K. and Germany) but being derided by critics. I’ve listened to all three, and didn’t feel strongly enough one way or the other to buy them or keep them around for further listening.
But the quintet’s two recent singles from their upcoming June 11 album The National Health have thoroughly impressed me, and the LP is now one of my most anxiously-anticipated June releases. Lead single “The National Health” is a charging post-punk rocker that paints “a portrait of the national health,” while the just-released “Hips and Lips,” one of my favorite songs of the week, tumbles along like a sexy tramp stamp as it proclaims “You’re a puzzle to me/ And you always will be.” Stream both below.
