It’s been a little while since we’ve heard any new material from popular British star Ellie Goulding, whose “Lights” has enthralled people worldwide over the last year plus, but the last thing I would’ve expected was to hear the singer team up with bland U.K. rapper Tinie Tempah for a cover of… what the hell?… the lush harp-laced experimental pop song “Hanging On” by Active Child, which came in at #76 on our list of the Top 100 Songs of 2011.
Somehow, Goulding pulls of her parts, although she doesn’t quite hit the same note of genuineness and ingenuity that Pat Grossi achieves with ease. It’s Tinie Tempah’s annoying, worthless rap that interrupts the flow and makes the cover go rotten. And that’s too bad, because without the rap the cover is actually passable. Props to Goulding for covering an Active Child song — but next time, for god’s sake, please don’t add rapping to a heartbreaking, poignant slowmover. Please.
