At the end of June, we heard the new single from indie/alternative hip-hop group WHY?, “Sod in the Seed.” The band are consistently recognized by critical outlets as one of the best hip-hop acts in the business, and I’ve grown to love their unique stream-of-consciousness style over their last few releases.
The song, one of my favorite tracks of the year, heralded the Sod in the Seed EP, released a few weeks ago. Meanwhile, WHY? announced a new album, Mumps, etc., due out on October 9. So today I’m posting two tracks — the first is the lead single from Mumps, etc., the multi-instrumental wordplay-heavy “Jonathan’s Wolf” (a play on the singer’s name) and the second is the final track on the Sod in the Seed EP, “Shag Carpet.” It runs on sampled chamber-style vocals, bells, and more of Jonathan “Yoni” Wolf’s self-aware and highly entertaining rapping. Enjoy both below!
