Will Young was the very first Idol winner — the champion of the 2001-2002 inaugural season of Pop Idol, which preceded American Idol by the majority of a year. Since then, the talented singer has released five albums, all of which charted at #1 or #2 in his native U.K., though the singer’s only had one single (2003′s “Leave Right Now“) chart in the U.S., and it didn’t even crack the Top 80. (But in America’s defense, most of Will Young’s past singles are clichéd, annoying pop ballads.)
So American fans are probably unfamiliar with the artist, as I was before this week. But Will Young’s newest single, the smooth urban pop of “I Just Wanna Lover,” drew me in with its irresistible, sultry dancebeat and its message of love — and sex — making the world right when everything is going wrong. It’s a sexy tune that I could easily imagine finding on a “Rare Hits of the ’80s” compilation. Listen below and compare very favorably to Kelly Clarkson, our country’s first Idol winner.
