A few days ago I shared one of my favorite new songs with you, “White Lie” by up-and-coming California pop artist Jhameel. To my surprise, blogs started buzzing about him the same day — except it wasn’t about the same song. Instead, the track making its way around was “Shut Up,” which was released in mid-2011 but just received a video. A very sexy video. It’s just Jhameel and some chick acting out arguing and make-up sex through dance moves in a field somewhere, but its simplicity is part of the magic. Oh, and did I mention it’s oh so very sexy?
The song itself reminds me of mid-’00s electropunk band Head Automatica if they had recorded their first album in 2011. Jhameel screeches irresistible lines like “Would you like my heart upon a stake or platter / Would you hit me just to hear me call you bitch then master” over a disco beat and strings that are somewhat reminiscent of Prince or MJ. Can’t wait to see what this guy does in 2012.
