Joss Stone turns Broken Bells’ “The High Road” into powerful soul-rock

Award-winning English singer-songwriter Joss Stone, who has become a household name with her passionate soul/blues rock, will release a second covers album called The Soul Sessions Volume 2 on July 31, and the most notable cover it contains is this version of Broken Bells‘ (The Shins‘ James Mercer + Danger Mouse) wonderful 2010 song “The High Road,” one of my favorites of that year.

Joss puts a soul-rock spin on the song that makes it sound like a misplaced ’70s hit that has turned up decades later — only, the production is too digital-age.  But who cares.  That reverb-y guitar intro and Joss’ powerful wails bring out a different aspect of the tune, especially compared to Mercer’s reticent mutterings.  It’s like a remake of a movie from decades before the movie even came out.    Cool.  Previously: our LP1 review
