Murder by Death’s “I Came Around” is Johnny Cash fronting an alt-rock band

Murder by Death are one of those indie rock bands that have been around for a long minute — their September 25 release, Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon, is their sixth full-length in 10 years – but have never really expanded out of their small fanbase towards the mainstream.  There are good reasons for that, such as the band’s incorporation of instruments like cello and accordion, as well as singer Adam Turla’s baritone vocals, which are more country than rock.

But critics consistently praise the band, and their last effort, 2010′s Good Morning, Magpie, still gets rotation in my iTunes — especially the tongue-in-cheek cabaret-rock effort “You Don’t Miss Twice (When You’re Shaving with a Knife).”  And while the band’s newest single, “I Came Around,” doesn’t match that song, it’s still a great listen.  Think a verbose Johnny Cash fronting an alternative rock band.  You can hear the track below.
