Song of the Day: Animal Kingdom’s glorious alt-rock tune “Two by Two”

London-based indie/alternative band Animal Kingdom became the first artist on The Tune to have a full album named Song of the Day when I first heard the spectacular The Looking Away.  But when my fiancée and I listened to the band’s debut 2009 release Signs and Wonders, however, we liked it even better than the new album, comparing it to Death Cab for Cutie, Coldplay, and even U2.

The highlight from that album, if one can be chosen, is the glorious “Two by Two.”  It’s a towering alt-rock song about the carnal side of humans, using a Biblical metaphor to describe the walls we build around ourselves to avoid getting hurt by others of our kind — who all have “something animal in [their] eyes.”  Despite the fact that I was an English major, I can’t really communicate how my soul swells when I hear this song to the point of bursting, so I’ll just leave you with the chorus and a stream:

Animals we are
I don’t want to go out hunting
Keeping us apart
Though we move as one
Animals we are
I don’t want to go out hunting
I will build an ark
For the rain to come
