Song of the Day: Billy Talent roar back on the epic & furious “Viking Death March”

Canadian punk rockers Billy Talent have been one of my favorite hard rock bands since I found them when they opened for My Chemical Romance back in 2008.  But the band’s most recent album, 2009′s Billy Talent III, disappointed me as well as many other fans [read my review].

Not to worry, however —  the band are back as strong as ever on “Viking Death March,” the latest song from Billy Talent.  It transplants the sound of the band’s best album, Billy Talent II, into a world that’s changed a lot in six years.  But this kind of epic, angry punk rock is never obsolete — on the contrary, this is one of my favorite songs of the year.  I don’t quite understand the title, but that last line smacks me across the face everytime I hear it: “Down on your knees, you don’t look so tough/ Open your eyes and the empire FALLS!”  I love this song and I can’t wait for the album, which should be out sometime between July and October.
