The definitive cover version of Prince‘s “Nothing Compares 2 U” is definitely Sinéad O’Connor‘s version, which hit #1 in 1990. Since then, many other artists have covered the tune… but none that I like half so much as L.A. electropop group Capital Cities’ fresh interpretation. The band are one of my biggest infatuations of 2012, and when I saw this pop up in my Soundcloud feed, I hit play immediately and held my breath till the lyrics started and I was sure that it was a cover, at which point I loudly yelled “YES!”
The cover certainly lives up to my excitement, transforming the nearly-obsessive romantic ballad into an upbeat, major-key dance-pop track. I love the little things, like the horn flourish at 2:47, the long intro, and the abrupt ending. Without a doubt, this will be one of my favorite cover songs of the year.
