Out of all the pop-punk bands I spent my teenage years loving, I never would’ve suspected that Yellowcard would be one of the ones that would still be together a decade later — let alone be making some of the best pop-punk music in the world these days. After their disappointing 2007 album Paper Walls, the band took a four-year hiatus before releasing When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes last year, and the awesome single “For You, and Your Denial” marked the beginning of the band’s resurgence.
More recently, the violin-toting band released a new single called “Always Summer,” which has become one of my 2012 anthems and as well as one of my favorite pop-punk songs in years. And now Yellowcard have released another song from their upcoming August 14 full-length Southern Air. ”Awakening” is a huge yet introspective track, a fist-pumping anthem that succeeds in being intimately personal despite the loud rock music: “Bottoms up tonight/ I drink to you and I/ Cause with the morning comes the rest of my life/ And with this empty glass/ I will break the past/ Cause with the morning I can open my eyes/ I want this to be my awakening.” This is great stuff.
