California gloom-pop act Tashaki Miyaki invoke a cross between The Jesus and Mary Chain‘s poppier stuff and Dum Dum Girls, and they lend those tones to a cover of Swedish pop group Roxette‘s 1990 worldwide smash “It Must Have Been Love” that they posted on Soundcloud a few days ago. Personally, I never cared much for the original, which I feel is a fairly flat and bland post-’80s ballad — but this cover brings a new melancholy energy that suits the song’s lyrics much better than the twinkle of Roxette’s version.
