The xx’s freshest tune, “Chained,” is full of heartache and minimalism

London-based group The xx, whom you may know from “Crystallised,” “Islands,” or “VCR” off of their debut 2009 release, the critically-renowned xx, have announced a sophomore album called Coexist for September 11 in the U.S. and September 10 internationally.

The first studio recording they released was the spectacular “Angels,” a spare and aching sob of a song that is sure to find its way into the top portions of our Best Songs of 2012 list.  Now the band have another single, “Chained,” and it too is full of heartache and minimalism — but it’s a full-on duet.

A casual yet steady beat provides the background, and the band break down to just a bassline on part of the chorus, just like “Angels.”  ”We used to get closer than this/ Is it something you miss?” Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim sing together in disconsolate tones.  It’s okay to cry if you want to.
